Funding

The multimodal corridor study costs $200,000. The town contributed $50,000 in Fiscal Year 2023 to match $150,000 in funding from the Metropolitan Planning Organization.

Construction is currently funded by the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Schedule

The planning study was completed in 2024 and endorsed by the Board of Commissioners on June 10, 2024. Project findings and recommended improvements will be shared with the North Carolina Department of Transportation to inform the future construction project.

The construction project is scheduled in the draft State Transportation Improvement Program for Fiscal Year 2031.

The State Transportation Improvement Program includes a project to widen South Churton Street from Interstate 40 to the Eno River to relieve traffic congestion and provide north-south pedestrian and bicycle connectivity.

In 2019, the North Carolina Department of Transportation developed concepts for the widening project. No preferred alternative or cross section was designated by the town at that time.

Town staff and leaders recognize the importance of a well-designed South Churton Street. A quality design that enhances safety, improves flow and presents a beautiful entryway to town will benefit the local community and the wider network.

The town has initiated this study to develop alternatives that consider the needs of the town and all users of the corridor.
