Please maintain a respectful attitude and volume in the town's cemeteries.

• Pets must be leashed and must remain on paved paths.
• Pet waste must be removed from site or placed in designated waste bins.
• Gravestone rubbings damage gravestones and are not allowed.
• No form of political or commercial advertising may be placed in the cemeteries or on any walls or fences enclosing them.
• Motor vehicles only may be driven or parked on marked roads for activities consistent with a cemetery's use. Equipment necessary for grave preparation or monument setting is the exception at the Town Cemetery.

Follow the law

It is against the law to to do the following without authorization of the law or consent of the deceased's surviving spouse or next of kin:

• Place any trash in or on the cemetery.
• Change the location or remove, disturb, vandalize or destroy any stone, brick, iron or other material or fence enclosing a cemetery.
• Tamper or do any of the above with any shrubbery, flowers, plants or other articles planted or placed within a cemetery to designate the location of human remains or to preserve a person's memory and name.

Violation of General Statute 14-148 is a Class 1 felony if the damage is $1,000 or more and a Class 1 misdemeanor otherwise.  

Plantings

No one may plant, prune, or remove any plant in the cemetery. Town staff may remove:

• Trees, shrubs or other plants that hinder a cemetery's maintenance.
• Flowers or plants as soon as they deteriorate or become unsightly. 

Decorative items

Small flags may be placed in the ground at gravesites during the weeks of Memorial Day and Veterans Day. No other decorations are allowed on the ground between March 1 and Nov. 1, when the town mows and performs grounds maintenance.

Annually on March 1, town staff prepare for mowing by removing and discarding decorative items, including:

• Christmas or Valentine’s Day decorations.
• Damaged decorations, such as deteriorating silk flowers or broken vases.
• Decorations that have blown from their location and are not attached to a gravesite.
• Decorations placed on the ground, such as artificial flowers, plastic vases, wreaths, borders, fences, pictures, toys, ornaments or other memorial items.
